Microspir is a First Spinoff project funded by the Wallonia Region aiming to develop a home appliance allowing the general public to grow spirulina - a microalgae - at home.
The appliance meets a growing need among consumers to access local, healthy or self-produced food (vegetable gardens, do it yourself). As we are living a food transition, Microspir is part of a sustainable production approach with a production method that requires very few resources. The nutritional composition of Arthrospira platensis meets our body needs and a growing interest for healthy food. The incubator produce by Microspir allows users to daily consume fresh spirulina. Compared to existing photobioreactors, there is a need for automatic control of light intensity according to algae concentration to ensure good productivity rate and avoid photoinhibition or photolysis.
